Would you like to join Macquarie’s WIL CoP?

In May this year, we launched Macquarie University’s work-integrated learning (WIL) community of practice (CoP) with a panel discussion about different approaches to teaching WIL. The WIL CoP is a supportive community of current and aspiring WIL practitioners who come together to share experiences, ideas, successes and lessons learned. We plan to meet 3-4 times per year and share information and resources throughout the year.

If you have an interest in the WIL space and would like to join us, please register for the below events and complete this membership form.

Getting started with WIL

Wednesday, 6 September, 12:30-2pm, 29 Wally’s Walk, 123 Academy (or via Zoom)

Associate Professor Kate Lloyd will provide an overview of WIL and suitable pedagogies and we’ll have a discussion with several WIL Unit Convenors about their tips and tricks for teaching WIL:

  • Dr Catherine Fargher Department of Media, Communications, Creative Arts, Language and Literature
  • Professor Deborah Richards, School of Computing
  • Dr Hamed Jafarzadeh, Department of Actuarial Studies and Business Analytics

Light catering will be provided for those attending on campus.

Benefits of WIL for student learning

Did you know that participating in WIL can:

  • increase student confidence,
  • develop student’s professional identity and gain access to graduate roles in their fields,
  • advance student’s theoretical knowledge and transferable skills and
  • help students to understand at a practical level what ethical practice means?

WIL Pedagogies

  • Are purposive, relational learning in context that enhances self-efficacy and sense of purpose,
  • Build students’ capabilities for reflective and ethical practice and
  • Engage students in new ways of seeing, thinking and doing.

Different ways to do PACE and WIL

Tuesday, 10 October, 10-11:30am, 1 Central Courtyard, room 114 (or via Zoom)

Experienced WIL Unit Convenors will share the particulars of the model(s) they use for teaching WIL (e.g., workplace-based projects, classroom-based projects, internships, etc.) followed by a breakout discussion to learn more about the model that interests you.

Light catering will be provided for those attending on campus.

The above events will be held on-campus, but there is a Zoom option for those who can only join online. The Zoom link will be sent to you once you register.

At both events, there will be plenty of time to network, share your own experiences and learn from others.

Participants in the first WIL CoP event identified topics they’d like to explore at future WIL CoP events: a basic introduction to WIL, where to access resources for teaching WIL, how AI can be used to develop reflective practice, interpreting industry feedback for course design, course evaluation through an employability lens, how does WIL add value for students working full-time. Please add topics of interest to you when you complete the membership form.
